Can You Put a Clickable Link in an Instagram Post? (2026 Answer)
September 29, 2026 · 6 min read
Not on a free account. Instagram captions and comments are plain text unless you pay for Meta One. Use bio links, a Story link sticker or DMs. Full 2026 guide.
Quick answer: Not on a free account. A URL typed into an Instagram caption or comment shows up as plain text that nobody can tap. As of 2026 the only way to put a real clickable link on a feed post or Reel is a paid Meta One plan (Advanced and above, from $49.99 a month in the US), with a small monthly allowance. Free accounts get clickable links in four places: the bio (up to five links), the Story link sticker, DMs and broadcast channels. That is why captions still say "link in bio".
Are links in Instagram captions clickable?
Not on a standard account. Paste https://example.com into a caption and it posts as plain text: not blue, not tappable, and awkward to copy. The same goes for Reel captions, carousel captions and comments. The only tappable things in a normal caption are @mentions and #hashtags, and both lead to places inside Instagram.
Instagram has kept captions link-free for most of its history, largely to limit spam and keep people in the app. That is changing, but only for people who pay.
Can you add a clickable link to an Instagram post or Reel?
Yes, if you pay, and only a few times a month. In March 2026 Meta confirmed it was testing clickable caption links for some Meta Verified subscribers, capped at 10 a month and shown only in the mobile app. In September 2026 Meta launched Meta One, a set of paid plans across its apps, and links in posts and Reels became part of the creator and business tiers. According to Meta's help centre, eligible public accounts get:
- Up to 4 posts and 4 Reels with links a month on Advanced (from $49.99 a month in the US)
- Up to 8 posts and 8 Reels a month on Expert
- Up to 12 posts and 12 Reels a month on Max
To use it, write your caption first (one is required), tap Add link, paste the URL, tap Done, then share. You cannot edit the link once the post is live, so check it before posting. Allowances reset when your plan renews and do not carry over. Teens cannot use it, and Meta says plans, prices and availability vary by region, so treat these numbers as a snapshot. Every Meta One creator and business plan, starting with Essential (from $14.99 a month in the US), also raises the bio limit from five links to 20, each with an image and title.
Three other features put tappable things on posts:
- Affiliate product tags in Reels. Since spring 2026, eligible creators in supported markets can tag up to 30 products in a Reel, including by pasting an affiliate link. Viewers tap a product bubble and land in the brand's app or website. It started in five markets and is expanding.
- Shopping tags. Businesses with a product catalog can tag products in posts. The tag opens a product page that leads to the store.
- Edits overlay links. Reels exported from Meta's Edits app can carry tappable overlays, but only to Instagram profiles or Reels.

Why did "link in bio" become the convention?
For most of Instagram's life, the website field on your profile was the only clickable link an ordinary account had. Story links (the old swipe up) were limited to verified accounts or those above a follower threshold until October 2021, when Instagram opened the link sticker to everyone. The bio held a single link until April 2023, when Instagram raised it to five. So people learned to write "link in bio" and let one profile link do all the work, which is also why link-in-bio pages exist.
How to send people to a link from an Instagram post
- Add the link to your bio first: Profile, then Edit profile, then Links, then Add external link. Instagram shows only the first link up front and folds the rest into a list, so put this post's destination at the top. Our guide on adding multiple links to your Instagram bio covers ordering.
- Write a specific call to action near the start of the caption, before the "more" cut-off. Skip a bare "link in bio". Try "Get the full recipe: tap the first link in my bio @yourname." Tagging your own handle gives people a one-tap route to your profile.
- Pin a comment that repeats it. You can pin up to three comments per post or Reel. A URL there still will not be clickable, but "Link is the first button in my bio" catches people who skim comments.
- Share the post to your Story and add a link sticker pointing to the same page. Here is how to add a link to an Instagram Story.
- Offer the link by DM. "Comment LINK and I'll send it" works because links in DMs are clickable. Reply by hand or with a comment-to-DM tool.
Why is my Instagram link not clickable?
- It is in a caption or comment. Those are plain text for most accounts. Move the link to your bio or a Story sticker.
- It is typed into the bio text. URLs in the bio box are not tappable. Use Edit profile, then Links.
- Instagram blocked the URL. Links that look spammy or break the rules, including some shorteners, can be removed. Try the full destination URL.
- Your paid link allowance ran out. Meta One limits reset at renewal. Until then, use your bio.
- Old app version. Newer link features appear in updated apps first. Update Instagram and check again.

Instagram's own links vs a link-in-bio page
| What you get | Instagram native links | Link-in-bio page (lit.bio) |
|---|---|---|
| Links on your profile | Up to five, or 20 on Meta One | Up to 10 free, unlimited on Pro |
| Shown up front | First link only | All of them, on one page |
| Links on posts | Paid plans only, capped monthly | Point every post to one page |
| Change after posting | Paid post links cannot be edited | Edit any time |
| Reuse on TikTok, Threads, X | No | Same URL everywhere |
| QR code | No | Yes, free |
| Cost | Free, post links from $49.99/mo | Free (Pro $9/mo or $49 once) |
Why one link-in-bio URL is the smart thing to put there
If you post a few times a month and your bio holds one or two links, Instagram's native options may be all you need. Once you are pointing different posts to different places, one lit.bio page in your top bio slot handles it: your shop, newsletter, latest video, booking page and other profiles, up to 10 links on the free plan, with 7-day click analytics so you can see what people tap. No ads, every theme is free, and there is no fee on links to your own shop or products. Pro is $9 a month or $49 once if you want more later.
Because the page is yours, the same URL works on TikTok, Threads and in your email signature, and changing a link takes one edit. Your captions can say "link in bio" and mean it. Start free and put everything behind that one tap.
