How to Add a Link to WhatsApp: Business Profile, Status and wa.me (2026)
September 29, 2026 · 6 min read
Add a link on WhatsApp via the Business profile website field (up to two), a text Status, a Channel update, or a wa.me click-to-chat link. Steps inside.
Quick answer: WhatsApp has no single bio link like Instagram. On a WhatsApp Business account, open the Tools tab, tap Profile, and fill in the website field; Meta documents a limit of two websites per business profile. Personal accounts can type a URL into About, but it is plain text you should not rely on, and the Instagram link field WhatsApp has been testing only covers Instagram. For everywhere else, build a click-to-chat link in the form https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format (no plus sign, zeros, spaces or dashes), and put it on your link-in-bio page so one tap opens a chat with you.
Where can you put a link on WhatsApp?
There are four places, and they work differently: the business profile (websites), your personal profile (About and, on some accounts, an Instagram link), Status (links in a text status are tappable for 24 hours), and Channels (links inside channel updates show a preview). The fifth piece is the reverse direction: a wa.me link that sends people from anywhere on the web into a WhatsApp chat with you. For most small businesses that last one does the most work.
How to add a website to your WhatsApp Business profile
- Open the WhatsApp Business app and go to the Tools tab.
- Tap Profile to open your business profile.
- Tap the website field.
- Paste your URL, including https://, then tap Save.
- If you want a second address, add it in the extra website slot. Meta documents a maximum of two websites for a business profile.
- Open your profile from another phone, or ask a friend to, and tap the link once to check it opens.
Menu names shift between versions, and WhatsApp says some business profile updates are still being tested. The stable path is Tools, then Profile, then the website field. The same screen also lets you add an email, address, hours, and a linked Facebook Page or Instagram profile. With only two website slots, many businesses put their main site in one and a link-in-bio page in the other, so the menu, booking, shop and reviews all sit behind one tap.
Can you add a link to a personal WhatsApp profile?
Partly. There is no website field on a personal account. You can type a URL into About (Settings, then tap your name, then About), but About is a short status line and you should not count on the URL being tappable for everyone. Since 2025 WhatsApp has been testing a Links section in profile settings that lets you add your Instagram profile, with privacy options such as Everyone, My contacts or Nobody. As of 2026 it only supports Instagram and may not show on every account yet. If you need a real website link on a personal account, use Status or share a wa.me link elsewhere instead.
How to add a link to your WhatsApp Status
- Open the Updates tab.
- Tap the pencil icon to start a text status.
- Paste your full URL, with a short line of context such as "New menu is up".
- Wait a moment for the link preview card to appear before you post.
- Tap Status (Contacts) to choose who sees it, then tap Send.
Viewers tap the link or its preview to open it. A text status is the dependable option. A Status disappears after 24 hours, so it suits offers and announcements, not a permanent link.
Can you add links to a WhatsApp Channel?
Yes, inside updates. When you post a channel update, paste a URL and WhatsApp shows it with a preview of the page and an image when one is available. Your channel also has its own link and QR code, found in channel info, that you can share to chats, Status and other apps. That channel link is worth adding to your link-in-bio page too, so followers on Instagram or TikTok can subscribe in one tap.
How to create a wa.me click-to-chat link
- Write your number in full international format: country code first, then the number.
- Remove the plus sign, any leading zero after the country code, and all spaces, brackets and dashes. A UK number written as +44 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123.
- Add it after https://wa.me/ to get https://wa.me/447700900123.
- For a pre-filled message, add ?text= and your message with spaces written as %20, for example https://wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20book.
- Test it on a phone and on a computer before you publish it. On a phone it opens the chat; on a computer it can open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
On the WhatsApp Business app you can skip the manual step: go to Tools, then Short link, to copy a ready-made link, set a default message, or view a QR code for print. Either kind of link works as a button on a link-in-bio page.
Why is my WhatsApp link not working or not showing a preview?
- Plus sign or leading zero in the wa.me link. WhatsApp's Help Center says to omit them, along with brackets and dashes. Use digits only.
- The number is not on WhatsApp. Click to chat only opens a chat with a number that has an active WhatsApp account.
- Unencoded pre-filled text. Spaces and symbols in ?text= must be URL-encoded (a space is %20), or the message breaks.
- Disable link previews is on. In Settings, then Privacy, then Advanced, this option stops the links you send from generating a preview. Turn it off.
- You posted too fast. Previews take a few seconds to load. Wait for the card to appear before sending.
- The website has no preview tags. WhatsApp builds the card from the page's title, description and image tags. If a page lacks them, or the image is very large, you get a bare URL.
- Old app version. Profile links and new business profile fields arrive in stages. Update from the App Store or Google Play.

Why a wa.me link belongs on your link-in-bio page
For a lot of small businesses around the world, WhatsApp is where the sale actually happens: a customer sees a post, taps through, and asks a question in chat. A lit.bio page makes that path short. Add a "Chat on WhatsApp" button with your wa.me link and a pre-filled message, then add your menu or price list, your channel, your shop and your socials underneath, up to 10 links on the free plan with 7-day click analytics so you can see how many people tap the chat button. No ads, no fee on links to your own shop or products, and every theme is free.
Then use that one lit.bio URL everywhere: in one of your two WhatsApp Business website slots, in your Instagram bio, on your Facebook Page, and on a printed link-in-bio QR code at the counter. When your number, menu or offer changes, you edit the page once. Start free and give customers one tap to reach you.
